A Chinese company specializing in women’s clothing assured reporters that they were “gaming helmets”.
Russian company Expert Brokerassociated with PMC Wagner, bought 20,000 resin helmets from China’s Hangzhou Shinerain Import And Export Co in November and December 2022. The Chinese group said they were for “play use”. The Financial Times reported this.
The purchase of the helmets, divided into four batches for a reported cost of just over $2 million, came at a time when Prigozhin was recruiting thousands of Russian prisoners to be sent to the front in Ukraine.
According to Alibaba, Hangzhou Shinerin mainly sells women’s clothing, which means that the supply of protective headgear to the Russian Federation is not part of its normal business pattern.
The Chinese company said it knew nothing about Prigozhin or connections Expert Broker including PMC Wagnerand added that it makes helmets for gaming use.
The company refused to send the FT photos of the helmets and added that they would not send anything illegal.
