Portugal has decided to join the international effort to train Ukrainian pilots and mechanics on Western combat aircraft.
Portugal joined the “fighter coalition” and announced its intention to train pilots and mechanics. This was announced by Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba, who is visiting Lisbon.
The head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spoke with Foreign Minister João Gomes Cravinho and Defense Minister Elena Carreiras.
“Portugal has shown leadership by joining the tank coalition. Given the intensification of Russian rocket attacks on Ukrainian cities and villages, it is critical that Ukraine has the opportunity to throw Russia out of Ukrainian sky,” the minister insisted.
In this regard, Kuleba expressed gratitude to the Portuguese government for the decision to join the aviation coalition by training Ukrainian pilots and mechanics in Western-style combat aircraft.
The Portuguese side also confirmed their readiness to further support Ukraine on its path to membership in the European Union.
Topics of preparation for the NATO summit in Vilnius were also discussed in the context of deciding on the procedure for Ukraine’s entry into the Alliance, holding Russia and its leadership accountable for crimes against Ukraine, and supporting the peace formula by President Volodymyr Zelensky.
It will be remembered that Britain, the Netherlands and France joined the “air coalition”. US President Joe Biden approved plans to train Ukrainian pilots on F-16 fighter jets.
