They turned the protected region in the occupied part of Ukraine into a military training ground. This strait served as the main migration route for dolphins.
On May 19, the Ground Forces of Ukraine reported that Russian troops covered the strip of water between the mainland and the island of Dzharylgach with sand, thus joining it to the occupied territories of Kherson.
The Armed Forces of Ukraine explained that this was done in order to more intensively use the protected area of the national park for military needs.

Dzharilgach is an island in the Karkinitsky Gulf of the Black Sea. It is considered the largest island of Ukraine and the Black Sea. Administratively it belongs to the Skadovsky district of the Kherson region. The entire territory of the island and part of the nearby water area is included in the Dzharylgatsky National Natural Park.
