Reuters said, citing unidentified officials, that the weapons were sent to Ukraine “above the guaranteed amount.”
The United States Department of Defense “overestimated” American equipment for Ukraine by almost three billion dollars. This is what a Senate aide and a defense official said, Reuters news agency reported on Thursday, May 18.
The mistake was the result of “allocation of weapons removed from US trains and sent to Ukraine in excess of the guaranteed amount,” two senior defense officials said.
“We have identified inconsistencies in how we check equipment that we have transferred to Ukraine,” said one of the senior defense officials.
The officials and a Senate aide spoke on condition of anonymity. He said the accounting adjustment will be reported to Congress on Thursday.
A Pentagon spokeswoman said the number of overestimated weapons is likely to rise as the agency reviews the situation, adding the cost by $3 billion.
As we reported earlier, the United States announced a new $300 million aid package for the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
