A railway along the coast of the Caspian Sea would help connect Russian ports on the Baltic Sea with Iranian ports on the Indian Ocean and Persian Gulf.
Iran and Russia, within the framework of the North-South international transport project, agreed to finance and build an Iranian railway line. This was reported by Reuters.
Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Iranian counterpart Ibrahim Raisi watched the signing of the agreement via video link.
It was noted that the Rasht-Astara railway is considered an important link in the corridor designed to connect India, Iran, Russia, Azerbaijan and other countries by rail and sea. According to the Russian Federation, this route allegedly could compete with the Suez Canal as the main international trade route.
According to Putin, the North-South transport artery, of which the Rasht-Astara railway will be a part, will help to significantly diversify the global traffic flow.
He added that the 162 km long railway along the Caspian Sea coast will help connect Russian ports on the Baltic Sea with Iranian ports on the Indian Ocean and Persian Gulf.
Raisi called this agreement an important and strategic step towards cooperation between Tehran and Moscow.
According to the newspaper, Russia and Iran were forced to strengthen their political and economic ties due to Western economic sanctions.
Recall that in Iran they demonstrated the maintenance of a sub-sanctioned aircraft from the Russian Federation.
It has also been reported that Ukraine is preparing sectoral sanctions against Iran.
