Instead of the Russian name Kaliningrad, it was proposed to use the Baltic name Karalyauchi or the historical German name Koenigsberg.

The Latvian Expert Language Commission recommends changing the name to Russian Kaliningrad. The commission suggested using the historical Baltic or Germanic name of the city. The corresponding conclusions-recommendations are distributed by the linguists in Twitter.

Thus, the expert commission of the State Language Center advises to use the traditional name Karalyauchi or the historical German name Koenigsberg in the Latvian language instead of the Russian name Kaliningrad to designate the corresponding Russian exclave.

Latvian Foreign Minister Edgar Rinkevich commented decision of the commission with the phrase: “Kaya, Karalyauchi.”

Remember that in Poland they officially approved and changed the names of the city of Kaliningrad and the Kaliningrad region of the Russian Federation. The change took effect on May 9. Now the city is called Krulevets, and the region is called Krulevetska.

The spokesman of the President of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Peskov, said that the renaming of Kaliningrad by the Polish authorities is no longer “Russophobia, but a process bordering on madness.”
