So far, six are dead and 11 are missing. The fire has become one of the nation’s deadliest in the past 50 years.
In the city of Wellington in New Zealand, on May 16, a fire broke out in a hostel, resulting in the death of at least six people and eleven others missing. The Guardian newspaper reported this.
It was learned that the Loafers Lodge hostel caught fire shortly after midnight on Tuesday. By dawn, the upper floors of the building were completely engulfed in flames.
New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Gipkins said at least six confirmed casualties were now known, but he predicted the death toll could rise.
He said the fire was one of the deadliest in the country in the past 50 years.
With the building’s roof collapsed and parts of it badly damaged, authorities warned it would take some time to recover and identify all the bodies.
The causes of the incident are being investigated.
According to the newspaper, Loafers Lodge offers simple, inexpensive rooms for people of all ages. Both the unemployed and the doctors and nurses of the nearby hospital live there.
