Since the beginning of the war against Ukraine, Russia has deployed the highest number of strategic bombers capable of carrying nuclear weapons to the border of Norway and Finland. This was reported by the Norwegian newspaper The Barents Observer.
The bombers are based at the Olenya airbase in the Murmansk region. In particular, in the satellite image for May 7 at the airport, you can see two Tu-160 and Tu-22, 14 Tu-95 units, three An-22 (or An-12) aircraft, a tanker of Il-78. aircraft, as well as three helicopters.
From this base, Russia’s strategic aviation recently took off to strike with cruise missiles against Ukraine.
The work of abandoned bombers does not dry up, the publication believes. NATO scrambled two F-35 fighter jets to meet a group of seven Russian aircraft, including two Tu-160s, flying in international airspace north of Norway’s Finnmark region.
A large number of bombers appeared at the base in October last year. At that time, Norwegian analysts linked this move to the exercises of the strategic nuclear forces Grom and the threats of the leadership of the Russian Federation with nuclear weapons from the West.
Recall that Finland and Sweden have moved their naval forces to a state of high alert by ships of the Russian Federation, which are visible nearby.
