Erdogan’s main opponent, general opposition candidate Kemal Kilicdaroglu and third candidate Sinan Ogan voted in Ankara.
Kilicdaroglu, after the vote, noted in a commentary in publications that “we all lack democracy” and expressed hope that “spring will come to this country and spring will continue.”
If none of the candidates receives more than 50% of the votes, the presidential race will decide who wins in the second round, which will be held on May 28.
