The investigation, according to the RMF24 news portal, involved leading Polish investigators from the organized crime and corruption department. The national prosecutor’s office wants to understand whether gas lobbyist Schroeder, who is close to the Kremlin, could use his position in the Russian energy sector to pressure the EU countries and Ukraine.
It is assumed that Schroeder, de jure holding senior positions in Russian energy companies, helped Russia put pressure on the EU countries so that they, in turn, refused military support for Ukraine.
The documents that the investigators have already managed to collect confirm that Schroeder, even after the start of the invasion, did not cut off his ties with the Kremlin and continued to hold high positions in Russian structures. In particular, he resigned from the board of directors of Rosneft on May 20, 2022 only after the deputies of the European Parliament threatened him with personal sanctions.
On the eve of May 11, the Christian Democratic Union demanded that Schröder be stripped of the title of “former chancellor.” This happened after the politician came on May 9 to the Russian embassy in Germany.
