ANAHEIM, California (AP) – The mayor of the city of Anaheim, Southern California has resigned over a rampant political scandal. Sell the Angel Stadium Baseball team.
Mary Harry Sidou resigned Tuesday, her attorney, Paul S. Meyer said in a statement Monday. He said that the negotiations at the stadium were legal and that Sidhu was not asking for campaign contributions related to the deal.
“Mary Harry Sidhu has always acted for the best interests of the city of Anaheim as her top priority, and she does so today,” Meyer said in a statement.
The resignation came a week after the city of Orange County, home to 347,000 people, said it found out it was Siddhu. Allegedly in connection with the stadium agreement with federal officials.
Following this, Sidu’s colleagues in the city council invited him to resign and asked him if the sale of the stadium would continue. The city is expected to discuss the stadium plan at a meeting on Tuesday.
“No one should see their mayor resign in such a difficult situation, but we welcome this resignation,” city spokesman Mike Lister said. “We welcome some clarity as part of a larger effort to assess the situation we are in and find the best way for our city.”
Anaheim is in talks to sell a parcel of land near the stadium in Los Angeles. The team will agree to stay in the city until 2050 and buy the stadium and surrounding parking lots, where it will build houses, shops and restaurants.
The Los Angeles Times reported that Sidhu’s federal officials were investigating allegations of providing confidential information to the British at least twice during negotiations in hopes of receiving a donation for the campaign.
Sidu was not charged with any crime.
The scandal erupted in Anaheim last week when he was the former Chamber of Commerce executive charged as part of a larger investigation into the fraud of a mortgage lender by federal officials. This weekend, a California Democratic Party Representative resigned after it was revealed he was an employee witness in the investigation and authorities said they suspected he paid bribes to public officials.
