South Africa supplied weapons and ammunition to the aggressor country using a ship that docked at the Simonstown naval base in Cape Town in December 2022. The United States recorded the parking of a cargo ship at this naval base, then the ship with military cargo went to Russia. This was announced on May 11 by US Ambassador to South Africa Ruben Brigetti, News24 reports.
The U.S. is convinced that South Africa, despite professing a neutral stance on the Russian invasion of Ukraine, supplied weapons to the army of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, the statement said.
According to Brighetti, Washington will take this issue seriously.
The journalists asked the ambassador how accurate the US intelligence data on the supply of weapons from South Africa to Russia is. The diplomat replied that he was ready to bet his life on it.
Recall that in April the American edition of The Washington Post reported that China secretly approved the provision of lethal weapons to the Russian army in early 2023. However, Beijing said that China would not sell weapons to any of the parties to the war in Ukraine.
