The title track of FIFTY FIFTY’s ‘The Beginning: Cupid’ was released in February this year
Owners of the hit “Cupid”, FIFTY FIFTY had the secret of their success revealed by the chief producer of ATTRAKT, Siahwho in an interview with the Korea Times (via Koreaboo) said that a pre-assessment of the market was essential to arrive at the acclaimed song.
We knew that dealing with the music industry’s ‘pain points’ would be key to our success, so we focused our strategy on addressing these issues head-on,” he began to explain.
This is because, according to the Siah, K-pop has been produced with more focus on the visual aspects than on the music itself. So they went the other way, releasing a song “that people could genuinely appreciate”.
In response, we focused on the most basic fundamentals of music so that listeners can appreciate music for what it is. In today’s K-pop scene, companies tend to focus more on aesthetics, performance and visuals than on the music itself. Music often takes a backseat to these other factors. But we made it a priority to create music that people could genuinely enjoy, focusing on the essential elements.
Still, to conquer the feat, Siah states that he spoke with the members of the group to align the importance of transmitting the message of the song, valuing its essence and always seeking excellence:
I emphasized to our members – Keena, Aran, Sio and Saena – the importance of conveying a vivid image or even an entire story within the constraints of a three-minute song,” he detailed. “To achieve this, we prioritized the essence of the music over the look or appearance. We are continually refining this skill and I am incredibly proud of our members’ dedication.”
Released in February this year, ‘Cupid’ is the title track of ‘The Beginning: Cupid’ by FIFTY FIFTY. The song, which features both Korean and English versions, made the group the fastest to enter the Billboard Hot 100 chart, as well as topping several music charts around the world.
