The Ukrainian military is ready for a counteroffensive “in terms of motivation and recruitment of brigades.” However, not all equipment has arrived yet, including armored ones. Therefore, the Armed Forces of Ukraine still need “some things”, because the weapons are supplied in batches. Zelensky spoke about this in an interview with the BBC.
With what we have, we can go ahead and be successful. But we will lose many. I think this is unacceptable. So we need to wait, we still need a little time,” the head of state said.
Zelensky also stressed that partners cannot put pressure on the start of a counteroffensive, because they are partners, not owners. According to the leader, “the date of offensive action motivates us ourselves.”
They can consolidate their forces, give advice to Ukraine, help, offer anything. First, we are all free and open, and everyone has the right and freedom to offer their help or not, their opinions, etc. But do not push with it, because the war is going on with us. And you can’t force Ukraine to retreat from some of its values and interests. Ukraine cannot be forced to simply give up territory, he added.
The President also said that it is impossible to say with certainty that the counteroffensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine will fully restore the sovereignty of Ukraine. The defense forces need to move forward and prevent the conflict from freezing and repeating the Minsk agreements.
The head of state admitted that in the event of insufficient success in the counteroffensive, some countries may put pressure on Kyiv and persuade Moscow to negotiate, but none of them has the right to force Ukraine to cede territory.
Zelensky also does not rule out that the US presidential election could influence the situation with the help of Ukraine. However, he is confident that bipartisan support for Ukraine must remain.
In addition, the president denied involvement in the drone attack on the Kremlin. He considers this incident a “fictitious story”, thus Russia wants to find an excuse for strikes on civilians in Ukraine.
Zelensky also explained why Ukraine hides its losses at the front. He noted that such a decision was made by the military-political leadership of the country. The information will continue to be kept confidential.
Recall, on May 9, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Alexei Danilov said that the Supreme Commander-in-Chief had not yet approved the final plans for the counteroffensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, including the timing and direction of the advance of the troops.
