On the evening of May 9, Liverpool hosted the first semi-final of the Eurovision 2023 music contest.

    .

Performers from 15 countries took part in it. According to the results of voting by the audience and the jury, the following ten participants reached the final:

    • Croatia: Let 3 “Mama ŠČ!”
    • Moldova: Pasha Parthenius Soarele și luna
    • Switzerland: Remo Forrer “Watergun”
    • Finland: Kaarija Cha Cha Cha
    • Czech Republic: Vesna My Sister’s Crown
    • Israel: Noah Kirell “Unicorn”
    • Portugal: Mimicat “Ai coração”
    • Sweden: Loreen “Tattoo”
    • Serbia: Luke Black “Samo mi se spava”
    • Norway: Alessandro Mele “Queen of Kings”

Contestants from Malta, Latvia, Ireland, Azerbaijan, the Netherlands did not qualify for the final.

Among the participants of the first semi-final, the group Let 3 from Croatia, which performed the song “Mama ŠČ!”, aroused particular interest among the public. The following lines sound in it: “Mom bought a tractor, mom fell in love with a moron”, and in the refrains – “This little psychopath. Sneaky little psychopath. Psycho crocodile. Mom, I’m going to fight.”

Some viewers saw this as a parody of Alexander Lukashenko, since the lead singer of the group performed with a glued mustache. Others thought it was a parody of Vladimir Putin, as one of the participants in Let 3 brought fake nuclear warheads onto the stage.

The participants themselves said that the song is anti-war and concerns all the wars taking place on the planet, but now they are singing about Putin.

Recall that the Ukrainian group Kalush Orchestra won the Eurovision Song Contest 2022. Thus, next year’s competition was supposed to take Ukraine.

However, the European Linguistic Union announced that due to ongoing hostilities, the competition could not be held in any of the Ukrainian cities. The right to host Eurovision was transferred to the UK, whose representative in 2022 took second place in the competition. Participants from Russia and Belarus were not allowed to participate in Eurovision due to the war.
