This was announced today, May 9, according to CNN.
The court ordered Trump to pay Carol $5 million:
- 2 million in damages for her civil suit;
- another 3 million for the libel that occurred when Trump denied his guilt.
Carroll claimed that Trump raped her in the spring of 1996 in the dressing room of Bergdorf Goodman.
According to her, by that time she was already familiar with Trump and he asked her for help in choosing a gift for a friend, in the process of which he forced her to go into an exemplary room and committed sexual violence there.
Carol did not contact the police at the time, but she said she told two close friends about the event.
Although the jury did not accept in their decision that she had proven rape, they found that Trump committed sexual assault, which allowed the plaintiff to receive redress for the relevant actions.
Under the New York Adult Victims Act, passed in May 2022, victims of sex crimes can file a civil action against the abuser for damages, even if the statutory time limit for filing a claim has expired, if they can also show that the offense qualifies as a sex offense under law, the publication notes.
Carol also filed a libel suit against Trump, as the ex-president denied her accusations against him, in particular, stated that he had never met her in his life and suggested that in this way she was trying to increase sales of her new book.
