The US Department of Defense today, May 9, announced a new package of military assistance to Ukraine totaling $1.2 billion.

This package is provided under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI).
Unlike the U.S. Presidential Arms Reduction Authority (PDA), which the Department of Defense continues to use to supply equipment to Ukraine from DOD stockpiles on a historic scale, USAI is an authority under which the United States purchases assets and technologies from industry or partners, the department notes. .
This announcement is the start of a contracting process to provide Ukraine with additional priority capabilities, the Pentagon added.
This military assistance package will include:
- additional air defense systems and ammunition;
- equipment for integrating Western launchers, missiles and radars with Ukrainian air defense systems;
- ammunition to counter drones;
- 155 mm artillery shells;
- commercial satellite imagery services;
- training, maintenance and general support.
The United States will continue to work with its allies and partners to enable Ukraine to meet its immediate battlefield and long-term security needs, the Pentagon said.
