Right now, both Ukraine and Russia are convinced that they can win, said António Guterres.
Peace talks between Ukraine and Russia are not yet possible. This is what UN Secretary General António Guterres said in an interview with El Pais, published on Tuesday, May 9.
“Unfortunately, I believe that peace talks are now impossible,” he said.
According to Guterres, the reason is that now “both sides are convinced that they can win.”
“We, as much as possible, are talking to both sides to solve specific problems. The most important initiative is the export of grain from Ukraine …. And now I do not see the possibility of an immediate ceasefire and peace negotiations,” he added.
The Secretary General also noted that the main goal of the UN is to establish “a just world in accordance with international law and the UN Charter.”
Recall that on March 8, Guterres arrived in Kyiv. He then said that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine was a violation of the UN Charter and international law.
