The Presidents of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan will take part in the parade in Moscow on May 9.
Russian President Vladimir Putin is trying to use the May 9 Victory Day parade in Moscow to show Russia’s influence in Central Asia. This was stated by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
Kazakhstan’s President Kasim-Jomart Tokayev, Kyrgyzstan’s leader Sadyr Dzhaparov, Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirzioev and Tajikistan’s leader Emomali Rahmon will attend the Victory Parade in Moscow on May 9.
Analysts noted that no foreign leaders attended Victory Day celebrations in Moscow in 2022, and Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan did not hold parades, some citing health risks due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The institute believes that the late announcement of participation by Central Asian leaders likely indicates their reticence about direct and public support for the war, despite the Kremlin’s efforts to project its power.
ISW added that Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan also reportedly flew to Moscow for the Victory Day parade.
Remember, earlier in the Kremlin they said that they did not invite foreign leaders to the May 9 parade.
