The United States offered Turkey to send the Russian S-400 air defense system to Ukraine, but Ankara refused.
The United States has offered Turkey to send the S-400 air defense system, previously acquired from Russia, to Ukraine. However, Ankara rejected this offer. This was said by Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, writes Anadolu.
The United States said that the presence of the S-400 system excludes Turkey from the program for the development and mastery of modern Western F-35 fighters, so they proposed that Ankara transfer control of the system to America or another country, which is Ukraine.
“The United States asked us to send S-400s to Ukraine, but we said no,” Cavusoglu said.
According to him, these proposals are considered unacceptable for the country, because they are aimed at allegedly violating Turkey’s sovereignty.
The Turkish minister noted that currently the country does not want to return to the program, but wants to return the money paid, because it did not receive the planes. However, Turkey wants to buy F-16 fighter jets and spare parts from the US.
The S-400 is a Russian long-range and medium-range anti-aircraft missile system, a new generation anti-aircraft missile system (SAM). Created to destroy all forms of aerospace attack. Each air defense system provides simultaneous engagement of up to 80 targets (in the presence of 8 air defense systems) with guidance of up to 160 missiles on them.
Recall that the Turkish company Baykar, which is engaged in the production of drones, plans to build a plant in Ukraine. The project of the future plant for the production of Bayraktar TB2 in Ukraine has been completed.
