Farhan Haq said the UN Secretary General has delivered to all parties a proposal for further action.
Representatives of the Joint Coordinating Center (JCC) of Russia, Ukraine, Turkey and the UN at a meeting in Turkish Istanbul failed to reach an agreement on the continuation of grain exports from Ukraine across the Black Sea. This is what the press secretary of UN Secretary General Farhan Haq said, CNN reports.
According to him, the Secretary General of the UN conveyed to all the parties a proposal for further actions “aimed at improving and expanding the grain initiative, taking into account the positions expressed by the parties.”
“We encourage all parties to continue discussions, overcome operational challenges and work towards the full implementation and extension of the initiative,” he stressed.
Currently, daily inspections of previously authorized vessels continue. The organization encourages countries to continue negotiations on new ships, Haq added.
It will be recalled that the previous day, on May 5, the UN announced a high-level meeting on the extension of the grain agreement.
We add that in Turkey they announced the risk for the grain deal. Russia has an extensive list of requirements to extend the grain deal, starting with reconnecting Rosselkhozbank to the SWIFT system.
As you know, in March, Ukraine announced the extension of the grain initiative for 120 days, and Russia for 60. According to Moscow, the agreement will expire on May 18.
