This was announced today, on May 4, at a briefing by the Commissioner of the Verkhovna Rada for Human Rights Dmitry Lubinets, the Interfax-Ukraine agency reports.
According to our rough estimates, the Russian Federation is now holding more than 20,000 civilian hostages,” Lubinets noted.
The Ombudsman noted that these data are based on personal appeals to the commissioner from relatives whose relatives and friends were detained by the occupiers.
He expects that after the liberation of the temporarily occupied territories, this figure will increase significantly – in the occupied territories, Ukrainians do not apply to the ombudsman or apply very rarely, since Russia regards even an appeal to the Ukrainian ombudsman as espionage.
