Denmark, Iceland, Norway, Finland and Sweden signed a document stating that the future of Ukraine lies in the Euro-Atlantic family. In particular, the European Union has already granted Ukraine the status of a candidate country. The leaders of the five countries also assured that they would continue to work on supporting a high level of civil assistance to Ukraine, including through EU mechanisms. This is stated in the general statement of the Ukraine-Northern Europe summit, the Office of the President reported.
The Nordic countries of the EU will strongly support Ukraine in its efforts to implement the reform process and fulfill the requirements necessary for the early start of accession negotiations, and also await the report of the European Commission before the end of 2023, the statement says.
The document also mentions that the allies agreed to accept Ukraine into NATO at the Bucharest summit in 2008, and Ukraine applied for accelerated membership in the Alliance in 2022.
In addition, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland and Finland stressed that they will continue to provide Ukraine with strong support in order to strengthen the ability of the Ukrainian people to defend themselves.
Recall, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on April 21 that all NATO member countries agree that Ukraine should become a member of the Alliance. Now the Western allies are focusing on ensuring the victory of Ukraine over the aggressor country, the Russian Federation.
