The Panamanian-flagged Niovi was en route from Dubai to the port of Fujairah in the Gulf of Oman.
On Wednesday, May 3, Iran seized the second oil tanker in a week in Persian Gulf waters off the coast of Oman. This was reported by Reuters.
“The Panamanian-flagged oil tanker Niovi was captured by the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGCN) while passing through the narrow Strait of Hormuz,” the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet, based in Bahrain, said in a statement.
The Niovi last reported its location off the coast of Oman in the Strait of Hormuz, with Fujairah as its destination.
“The buoyant oil tanker Niovi was en route from Dubai to the port of Fujairah in the UAE when IRGCN boats forced her to change course into Iranian territorial waters,” the US Navy said.
The tanker is owned by Grand Financing Co and operated by the Greek company Smart Tankers.
About a fifth of the world’s oil and oil products pass through the Strait of Hormuz between Iran and Oman.
On April 27, Iran seized an oil tanker flying the Marshall Islands flag in the Gulf of Oman.
The US seized Iranian oil from a tanker at sea in recent days as part of a sanctions enforcement operation.
