The European Union is considering the possibility of restricting the transit of goods through Russia as part of the 11th package of sanctions against the aggressor country Russia. The influential publication Bloomberg writes about this.

The US, Europe and other key allies are preparing new sanctions against Moscow. Packages will be implemented individually, but will be coordinated. The key goal is to close loopholes and solve the problem of sanctions circumvention in general.

The plans will be made public during the Group of Seven (G7) leaders’ meeting in Japan later this month. At the summit, the leaders of the countries intend to discuss what has already worked and what options remain regarding further pressure on the Russian economy.

The EU’s 11th package will focus on loopholes in the sanctions already in place, officials said. Among the proposals being discussed are a ban on the transit of many goods through the territory of Russia and measures against ships that disable navigation systems. Much of the G7’s focus is on cracking down on Moscow’s ability to evade or circumvent existing restrictive measures.

The US and Japan are preparing their own sanctions packages, people say. Canada is working on human rights measures, including the alleged kidnapping of Ukrainian children and sanctions on the Russian defense industry.

G7 leaders are also expected to make progress on a mechanism to track Russian diamonds across borders, which could eventually pave the way for restrictions on this trade.
