Ukraine has received all the weapons it requested and is ready to attack and defend, but its territories are unlikely to be liberated this year.
The head of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, Mark Milley, believes that the Armed Forces of Ukraine are ready for offensive operations thanks to the help of Western countries. He said this in an interview with Foreign Affairs, published on Tuesday, May 2.
“They can attack and hold defense. They’ll do a lot of planning, coordination, etc., if they’re going to conduct an offensive operation, but they’re ready to attack and defend,” Milley said.
He also said that Putin seeks to quickly occupy Kyiv, move from the Russian border to the Dnieper in four to six weeks, and then deny Ukraine access to the Sea of Azov. However, Russia did not achieve its strategic military goals, and in late March or early April of last year, Putin adjusted his strategic goals, deciding to limit himself to the southern regions of Ukraine, consolidate power in Donbass and secure Crimea.
Meanwhile, Ukraine, according to Milli, launched two successful counter-offensives, during which Russian troops were forced to retreat, while Ukrainian troops closed ranks and continued the defense.
Despite this, during the winter, “significant territories hardly changed hands, except for Bakhmut,” the general said.
“And then the Ukrainians asked us for help in building up their forces so they could carry out offensive operations with … mechanized armored vehicles and infantry. We did it, but it’s not yet clear what will happen here,” said Milli ..
In his opinion, it would be “very difficult” for any of the parties to “achieve their political goals” through military means. Millie also does not see this as a possibility in 2023. At the same time, he emphasized that the aggressor country Russia has suffered huge losses – both militarily and economically.
It will be remembered that the previous day, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valery Zaluzhny discussed the situation at the front with his American colleague Mark Milli and mentioned the increase in the supply of weapons.
And on April 27, Zaluzhny and the head of the Office of the President, Andrei Yermak, had a telephone conversation with Millie and National Security Adviser of the US President Jake Sullivan.
