Sources of Russian publications said that Pablo Gonzalez reported the information received to the curators in the special services of the Russian Federation.
Russian-born Spanish journalist Pablo Gonzalez (Pavel Rubtsov), imprisoned in Poland in February 2022 on suspicion of espionage, may have been deported by the Russian military intelligence GRU to spy on Zhanna Nemtsova, the daughter of Boris Nemtsov. This was announced on Tuesday, May 2, by the Russian opposition publication Agency, citing sources at the Boris Nemtsov Foundation.
Gonzalez met Nemtsova in 2016 in Brussels. He began to be invited to Foundation events. After the arrest of the suspect, the Polish special services gained access to his digital media. Their analysis confirms that, since 2016, Gonzalez has been describing in detail the activities of Nemtsova and her friends, employees and partners of the Foundation, as well as students of the summer school of journalism in which she participated.
The source believes that in this way Gonzalez reported to his curators in the special services of the Russian Federation. He also asked to be reimbursed for expenses associated with introducing Nemtsova to the company. The likely agent is especially interested in the participants of the summer school of journalism, who come from Ukraine and the United States.
The reports mention a number of prominent people Gonzalez met through connections to the Nemtsov Foundation. Among them: lawyer Ilya Novikov and oppositionist Vladimir Kara-Murza – both were assessed negatively in the reports.
Gonzalez also reported participating in conferences in Europe, where he was invited to moderate panels.
Polish investigators also found letters from Boris Nemtsov on Gonzalez’s gadgets, which he copied from Nemtsova’s laptop while talking to her. Now the investigation plans to file another charge against Gonzalez – illegal access to information.
Pablo Gonzalez (Pavel Rubtsov) is a journalist with Russian and Spanish citizenship.
In the late 80s, his mother, the daughter of Spaniards, who was brought to the USSR in the 30s, returned to Spain.
