This spring, a record number of climbers conquered Everest – a total of 466 people from 65 countries received permission to climb. This was reported by The Himalayan Times on May 1.
According to Nepal’s Department of Tourism, this is the largest number of climbers in the past 70 years to climb the world’s highest mountain in one season.
Of them, 98 were women and 368 were men.
In total, the Nepalese authorities last spring gave permission to climb Everest to 96 climbers from China, 86 from the USA, 40 from India, 33 from Hungary, 21 from Canada, 18 from Russia and 15 from the UK.
Since May 29, 1953, when Nepalese Sherpa Tenting Norgay and Australian Edmund Hillary first successfully reached the summit, about seven thousand climbers have climbed Everest.
It was previously reported that climbers brought resistant microbes to Everest that adapted to the harsh climate.
