The US does not question the 2008 NATO declaration, but “the question is not if Ukraine will join the Alliance, but when.”
The United States and Germany are not yet willing to fulfill certain obligations for Ukraine’s accession to NATO. DPA reported this in relation to diplomats.
These are commitments that “significantly go beyond the NATO declaration of 2008.” In it, the then heads of state and government agreed that Ukraine and Georgia should join NATO. However, there is no specific timeline for this.
The US does not question NATO’s 2008 declaration, an official said, but “the question is not if Ukraine will join the Alliance, but when.”
According to the publication, President Volodymyr Zelensky recently called on NATO to clear Ukraine’s path to the Alliance at a summit in July, because today almost no one makes a greater contribution to Euro-Atlantic security than those Ukrainian soldier. Therefore, Ukraine did everything to ensure that Kyiv’s application was approved. Zelensky is receiving support for his demands from Central and Eastern European countries, particularly Lithuania.
“However, it is unlikely that they will be able to convince NATO partners such as the United States to change course. Opponents of a certain prospect of entry explain their position by saying that this goal is not yet realistic and may interfere with more important support for Ukraine. In addition, there is a risk that new NATO commitments could give Russia arguments for a more aggressive war.
It is reported that, according to data in NATO circles, the real movement in the negotiations on the prospects for the accession of Ukraine is likely only if Ukraine succeeds in the war against the Russian Federation. In this case, the NATO states should not be afraid to become a direct party to the war by accepting Ukraine.
According to the DPA, the United States considers additional arms supplies and other assistance to Ukraine in the current situation more important than plans to join NATO.
According to a senior official, long-term actions to strengthen Ukraine’s ability to resist Russian aggression are also being considered.
Recall that the United States, Germany and Hungary oppose the intentions of other NATO member states to offer Ukraine a “road map” for membership in the Alliance at the July summit in Vilnius.
