The presidential election in Paraguay was won by the candidate from the ruling party, Santiago Peña, who advocates maintaining diplomatic relations with Taiwan. It was announced on May 1 by the NHK television and radio company.
After 99% of the ballots were counted, Peña received 42.7% of the vote, while his main rival from the opposition coalition, Efrain Alegre, received 27.4%.
It was noted that Paraguay is one of 13 countries that have diplomatic relations with Taiwan, and the island’s only remaining diplomatic partner in South America.
The issue of Paraguay’s relationship with Taiwan has become one of the main elements of the presidential race. Peña advocated their continuation, while oppositionist Alegre advocated ending ties with the island and establishing diplomatic relations with China to increase exports of agricultural products.
It will be recalled that the PRC considers the democratically ruled Taiwan to be its territory and is building military, political and economic pressure to defend its rights.
Earlier, Chinese leader Xi Jinping said that “national reunification” on the island is one of the country’s policy priorities.
