China two prisoners were executed today for kidnapping and selling several children between 2003 and 2005.
Guangdong (South) Intermediate People’s Court sentenced to death Zhang Weiping And Zhou Rongping in December 2018, the verdict, later upheld by the provincial Higher People’s Court, which dismissed the convicts’ appeals, the official Xinhua news agency reported today.
Between 2004 and 2005 Zhou Rongping conspired with others to kidnap a child from his home, which the kidnappers gave to Zhang Weiping to sell.
For his part, Zhang kidnapped and trafficked eight minors between 2003 and 2005, the court found.
He Intermediate People’s Court ensured that “the legal rights of executed criminals were fully guaranteed until the execution of the death sentence”.
The Chinese authorities do not provide official figures on the number of death row inmates, but in its 2022 annual report, human rights organization Amnesty International noted that “thousands of executions were allegedly carried out” in that country.
Human trafficking in China
Human trafficking is an ongoing problem in China exacerbated by the pre-existing one-child policy and the gender imbalance that accounted for 42 million more men than women in 2017, according to the World Bank, although in recent years technologies such as DNA testing and facial recognition have helped solve cases that stalled for years.
Violence against women and girls is a serious human rights violation and women’s right to a life free of violence is included in international agreements. Worldwide, only 40 percent of women seek help after being abused, forcing institutions to promote prevention and care policies. (EFE)
