The letter, sent to the US President by 19 politicians, says that the US should stop sending weapons to Kyiv and focus on a diplomatic approach.
A group of US senators and congressmen from the Republican Party sent a letter to US President Joe Biden urging them to stop the transfer of arms to Ukraine due to the threat of war with Russia, Voice of America reports.
“With each new aid package and each new weapon provided to Ukraine, the risk of direct conflict with Russia grows,” said the letter, signed by 19 senators and congressmen.
The authors of the message ask to stop “unlimited aid to Ukraine” from the United States, using the term “proxy war”.
“We strongly oppose all future aid packages unless they are linked to a clear diplomatic strategy developed to bring this war to a swift conclusion,” the letter said.
Given the months it will take to deliver the Abrams tanks, the signatories predict the Biden administration is setup for a protracted conflict.
The signatories expressed concern about the United States’ current response to the war in Ukraine. They argue that US aid to the Ukrainian war effort threatens to escalate and “lacks the necessary strategic clarity,” let alone a strategy to end the war.
Lawmakers have stressed the need for the US to focus on its own military readiness and economic security, as well as claims that its own military is declining and that “foreign war financing” is hurting taxpayers.
The authors of the letter wrote about $113 billion in military, economic and humanitarian aid to Ukraine and called the United States Ukraine’s largest donor, and also claimed that “the contribution of our NATO allies pales in comparison” [с объемами американской помощи, -ред].
“Stocks that take years to replenish are depleted by Ukraine in a matter of weeks. Ukraine uses more artillery in a month than the United States can in six. We gave Ukraine more spears than can be done in four years,” the letter said.
The authors also fear a possible confrontation in the Indo-Pacific region in the coming years, where the US military may be unprepared due to how many weapons are sent to Ukraine.
A group of lawmakers is urging the US president to prioritize diplomatic efforts and promote a negotiated end to the war.
Among those who signed the letter were Mike Leigh, Eli Crane, Marjorie Taylor Green, Jay Vance, Rand Paul, Mary Miller, Paul Khosar, Matt Goetz, Dan Bishop, Mike Collins and others.
It was previously reported that a split was planned in the US Republican Party in Ukraine. Some Republicans have criticized the position of party members proposing to deny military aid to Ukraine.
