Katarina Maternova, Deputy Director General for Enlargement of the European Commission, is likely to be appointed as the new Ambassador of the European Union to Ukraine. This was stated on Wednesday, April 19, in an internal note of the European External Action Service, writes Euractiv.
In her current position, Katarina Maternova is involved in the development of the EU Neighborhood and Enlargement Policy and already has experience in dealing with the Ukrainian authorities.
The publication notes that the candidacy of Maternova is another indicator of rapprochement between Ukraine and the EU.
“The appointment of Maternova could be key to advancing European interests in Ukraine while offering all the technical support and expertise Kyiv needs to make progress on its accession path,” said by an EU official at Euractiv.
The current EU Ambassador to Ukraine, Estonian diplomat Matti Maasikas, has been in office since 2019. The new ambassador is due to succeed him in September 2023.
Let us remind you that the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry recalls its ambassador to Belarus Igor Kizim in Kyiv for consultations. They also strongly condemned the meeting between the leader of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko and the head of the so-called “DPR” Denis Pushilin.
