These measures will affect wheat, corn, sunflower and rapeseed. Other sensitive products will be investigated.
The EU authorities will develop a pan-European approach within the framework of the principle of common markets and a customs union, as well as provide additional financial assistance to farmers and develop strict measures against those Ukrainian agricultural products. This was stated by the Director of Political Communications of the European Commission, Dana Spinant, at a briefing, Interfax-Ukraine reports on Wednesday, April 19.
He expressed the proposals of the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, in response to a letter from the prime ministers of Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Romania and Bulgaria, who asked to solve the issue of importing products Ukrainian agriculture.
“The President is presenting three proposals to address the situation in these markets,” said Spinant.
According to him, in particular, in addition to the given package of 56.3 million euros for the most affected farmers in these countries, a second financial support package of 100 million euros is being prepared.
“Secondly, we will apply preventive measures in accordance with the current trade rules related to certain categories of grain. This applies, in particular, to wheat, corn, sunflower and rapeseed. And, thirdly, we start of investigating other sensitive products”, said Spinant.
He also said that European Commission Executive Vice President Valdis Dombrovskis will discuss these courses of action and proposals this afternoon with ministers from the respective five EU member states and Ukraine.
“From the beginning, we have been working hard, on the one hand, to support Ukraine in the export of its products, including agricultural products, because this is an important artery of life for the Ukrainian economy. We are working hard to help to bring agricultural products to the world markets where these products are needed, as well as solving problems related to food security, and we are fully committed to supporting our farmers,” emphasized emphasized the representative of the European Commission.
It was learned yesterday that the Ukrainian authorities took the initiative to hold a trilateral meeting with the participation of the European Commission and five EU countries to solve problems with the import of agricultural products.
Also on April 18, Poland and Ukraine agreed to resume transit of agricultural products. At the same time, imports from Ukraine will continue to be banned.
