CNN’s Alisyn Camerota, a former Fox News host, was unimpressed with the outcome of Dominion Voting Systems’ lawsuit against the conservative network.
“I’m not surprised by any of this, and I’m not surprised that I agree,” Camerota, who has worked for Fox News for 16 years, told “The Lead.” “I predicted it would be a deal from the beginning because Fox doesn’t want to air their dirty laundry in a lawsuit.”
The two sides reached a $787.5 million settlement on Tuesday, avoiding what could have been an embarrassing lawsuit that was extremely important to Fox News.
In a statement on Tuesday’s settlement, Fox News said it “recognizes the court rulings that find certain claims about Dominion to be false” and later called the settlement a reflection of Fox’s “continued commitment to the highest journalistic standards.” .
Camerota argued that the settlement figure — the largest publicly known defamation settlement involving a media company in US history — was still just “crazy change” for Fox News.
“They make more than $1 billion a year, their news division,” he said.
“I think this is a win for Fox. They don’t have to put their big stars on the witness stand and they haven’t even had to make a public apology,” she said.
He also dismissed analysis from his colleagues at CNN, saying: “When you say that, guys [Fox News] they admitted they lied – no they didn’t!”
“They say we recognize the court’s finding that certain statements about Dominion … are false,” Camerota said. “That doesn’t mean I lied. Who says they are fake. And they say “certain statements”. I’m not even saying they made those claims. They don’t even say which of their hosts made their claims. I think it’s the best outcome Fox could have ever hoped for once they got themselves into this mess.”
“I had the lawyers translate it into English, but I get your point,” CNN’s Jake Tapper responded.
Dominion sued for $1.6 billion, accusing Fox News anchors and executives of defaming it by airing false claims that its voting machines helped rig the 2020 election. Evidence uncovered in the lawsuit showed that some Fox News executives the network and talent knew these claims were not true, but aired them anyway.
