According to the updates of the list of lethal and non-lethal military support to Ukraine from Germany, the PATRIOT anti-aircraft missile system with missiles, 16 Zetros trucks and 2 border guard vehicles were delivered.
Background
Anti-aircraft missile systems Patriot in the United States began to develop 40 years ago. The Patriot was first used in combat in the early 1990s during the Gulf War.
The Patriot SAM battery consists of a radar, a control center and launchers (up to eight), each of which has four missiles. The price of one battery is about a billion dollars.
Characteristics of radar station system:
-
maximum target interception height – 24 km.
-
maximum interception range – 80 km;
-
the minimum is 3 km.
Impresses entire Patriot SAMs with surface-to-air guided missiles. The maximum engagement range ranges from 40 to 160 km, depending on the type of missile. At the same time, Patriot can destroy eight targets and is capable of shooting down not only aircraft and cruise missiles, but also ballistic ones.
The Ukrainian authorities started talking about the need for Patriot anti-aircraft missile systems even earlier – a year before the full-scale invasion of Russia. Then, in April 2021, the head of the President’s Office, Andriy Yermak, called on the United States to deploy these systems in Ukraine.
In the first months of a full-scale invasion, the president, members of the government, and officials daily called on the allies to close the sky over Ukraine, including handing over Patriot complexes to the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
