Taiwan will buy up to 400 land-based Harpoon anti-ship missiles from the United States to repel a possible Chinese invasion. Bloomberg reported this.
Taiwan will buy up to 400 land-launched Harpoon missiles designed to repel a potential Chinese invasion, completing a deal approved by Congress in 2020.
The Pentagon announced a $1.7 billion contract with Boeing to supply these missiles. Taiwan has previously purchased ship-based versions of the Harpoon made by Boeing Co.
“The US provision of defense products to Taiwan is essential to Taiwan’s security,” Pentagon spokesman Martin Meiners said.
The deal comes amid heightened tensions between the US and China. Taiwan is the main source of tension.
To recall, China conducted military exercises around Taiwan after the island’s President Tsai Ing-wen met in California with US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.
