An explosive device located a few meters from a Colombian police post killed a woman and injured four people this Monday in the city kakutaon the border with Venezuela, said the public force.
The explosion occurred shortly after 11:00 am (16:00 GMT) in a busy park in the city center. A fatal victim fell next to a street vendor and the victims are “receiving medical treatment at the hospital,” said Colonel Juan Ramirez, police commander kakuta (to the northeast).
The area has been cordoned off while “explosives experts” are trying to “rule out the location of another device,” the colonel added.
The explosive device was located “about 10, 15 meters” from Immediate Action Command (CAI) institutions.
“The main hypothesis we have is that (the attack) is directed against the CAI,” Ramirez said, adding that it could be “retaliation (…) for activities against criminal organizations involved in local illegal drug trafficking.”
According to the UN, Colombia is the country that produces the most cocaine in the world.
With a population of about 1.2 million. kakuta and its environs were the scene of several partisan actions THEN -which is negotiating with the government without a truce- and dissident rebels from FARC- that they accepted a bilateral ceasefire and announced yesterday a peace process that will start in May.
President Gustavo Petro seeks to end more than half a century of conflict through negotiations with various rebel factions. As part of his Total Peace policy, he also offers the subjugation of drug dealers in exchange for punitive sanctions.
