China watched the destroyer USS Milius throughout its journey and expressed its concern about it.
The American guided-missile destroyer USS Milius passed through the Taiwan Strait on Sunday, April 16, as part of an operation to support freedom of navigation, Reuters reports.
The US Navy’s 7th Fleet said the ship’s voyage through the Taiwan Strait was “routine” in accordance with international law.
According to the US military, this transit “demonstrates the United States’ commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific.”
China watched the American destroyer throughout its operation and expressed concern about it.
Taiwan’s Ministry of Defense reported that the destroyer USS Milius passed north through the strait and that during its passage, the situation in the strait was normal. At the same time, four ships and 18 aircraft of the Chinese army were found around the island today, four of which entered Taiwan’s air defense zone.
The US Navy takes warships through the strait about once a month, and also regularly conducts similar missions to ensure freedom of navigation in the disputed South China Sea.
Last week, the destroyer USS Milius sailed into Mischif Reef, where China has built an artificial island and the largest military base in the South China Sea, complete with an airstrip, radar and air defense systems.
It can be recalled that in January, China reacted very negatively to the passage of the American warship Chung-Hoon of the Arleigh Burke class in the Taiwan Strait.
