They were found guilty of involvement in the downing of a Ukrainian Boeing 737 on January 8, 2020, which killed 176 people.
Iran has sentenced 10 military personnel to prison for their alleged involvement in the 2020 shooting down of a Ukraine International Airlines (UIA) Ukrainian airliner flying to Kyiv in which 176 people died. This was reported on Sunday, April 16, by the Iranian edition of Mizan Online.
The publication states that one commander was sentenced to 13 years in prison, while nine others received sentences ranging from one to three years.
It was noted that the commander’s actions, which led to the downing of the aircraft, “were due to his ignorance of the situation and the mistaken belief that the detected target was the enemy.”
The commander of the Tor M-1 anti-aircraft missile system “fired two missiles” at the airliner “against orders” and without permission, the report said.
The names of none of the accused have not been named.
The verdict came after more than three years of research and 20 court hearings, during which a total of 117 plaintiffs filed their claims.
“This case is one of the most important, delicate and complex trials in the country in the past several years,” the website said.
To recall, UIA flight PS752 crashed three years ago on the Tehran-Kyiv route. About 3 minutes after takeoff, the airliner was hit by two surface-to-air missiles fired from an Iranian air force base and crashed into the ground 15 kilometers from Tehran airport. As a result, everyone on board died.
The downing of a passenger plane flying from Tehran to Kyiv occurred the night Iran fired missiles at a US air base in western Iraq in retaliation for the killing of Soleimani.
Most of the victims were Iranians and Canadians, 11 people were citizens of Ukraine.
It can be recalled that earlier the court in Canada decided to recover $107 million from Iran for the downed UIA plane. Lawyers for the plaintiffs say they will seek to seize Iranian property around the world so the families can receive their due compensation.
Earlier, the international group for coordinating aid to the victims of the downed UIA plane near Tehran asked Iran to confirm its willingness to participate in compensation negotiations within a certain time frame.
