Robert Habek believes that sanctions against Russia’s nuclear sector should also be included in the 11th EU sanctions package.
Germany proposed to include sanctions against Russia’s nuclear industry in the European Union’s 11th package. This is what German Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck said in an interview with dpa.
“We have seen that Russia is deliberately using energy dependence to exert pressure. Therefore, the federal government has called on the European Commission to also impose sanctions on the civil nuclear sector. This should be part of next package of sanctions,” he said.
According to the official, the EU has come a long way in many areas, including energy.
“The only thing left is the nuclear sector,” he added.
Nothing can justify a good attitude towards the Russian nuclear industry, Khabek believes.
“Nuclear technology is a very sensitive area, and Russia can no longer be seen as a reliable partner here,” he stressed.
The German vice-chancellor believes that a transitional period is needed on the issue of sanctions against Russian nuclear energy, but “it is important to start and not be afraid of decisive action.”
Recall that Khabek visited Kyiv in early April. After his visit, he called for sanctions against countries that, despite the war in Ukraine, continue to receive uranium from Russia.
In addition, the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, said that the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant is now impossible to protect, because the number of Russian troops has increased significantly in the area of the station.
