Finnish authorities refused to pay for Russian gas in rubles and initiated arbitration proceedings.
Russian Gazprom on the morning of Saturday, May 21, announced the suspension of gas supplies to Finnish company Gasum.
In Russia, this decision was explained by Gasum’s refusal to pay for deliveries in rubles.
It noted that Gazprom Export supplied 1.49 billion cubic meters of gas to Gasum in 2021, accounting for two-thirds of total gas consumption in Finland.
The cessation of gas supplies was also confirmed by Gasum.
In the next few days during the summer of 2022, the Finnish operator will provide its customers with gas from another source – via the Balticconnector pipeline from Estonia.
Gasum also announced that it will initiate arbitration proceedings in honor of a gas supply contract with Gazprom Export.
“Gazprom Export LLC will defend its interests in arbitration proceedings by available means,” the Russian company said.
Earlier, Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin said the country was ready to quickly phase out Russia’s natural gas and oil. According to him, weeks or months are in question, not years.
It was also reported that in March Finland reduced oil imports from Russia by 70%.
