The German Ministry of Defense authorized Poland to supply Ukraine with five MiG-29s left over from the GDR army.
Germany has agreed to the transfer of five Soviet-style MiG-29 Polish fighters to Ukraine. This is what German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said, Ukrinform reports.
“I am happy to announce that we can allow our Polish partners to transfer five MiG-29 fighters from the former stocks of the GDR army,” he said.
The minister stressed that the German government considered Warsaw’s application for permission to transfer the MiG-29 on the same day it was received – on Thursday, April 13.
Twenty years ago, Germany handed over to Poland 22 fighters of this type, which she left from the army stocks of the former German Democratic Republic.
In March, Poland gave some MiG-29s to Ukraine, but these were not fighters from those received from Germany for one euro. Despite the symbolic price, a transfer agreement containing an end user clause was concluded, so Germany had to give permission for re-exports.
Polish President Andrzej Duda said that Poland has transferred eight MiG-29 aircraft to Ukraine and is preparing to transfer six fighters of this type.
