Critics from both the left and the right have lashed out at conspiracy theorist Marjorie Taylor Greene after she tweeted in defense of the suspect arrested Thursday in a major leaked document.
Jack Teixeira, a 21-year-old Air National Guardsman from Massachusetts, has been arrested by federal agents in connection with a case involving highly sensitive documents about the war in Ukraine that were released online.
The Washington Post said there was video of Teixeira “yelling racial and anti-Semitic slurs before firing the rifle.”
But Greene (R-Ga.), a close ally of House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), issued a defense.
“Ask yourself who is the real enemy?” he wrote on Twitter. “A young, low-level National Guard? Or the administration waging war in Ukraine, a non-NATO nation, against nuclear Russia without war powers?
Greene, who spoke at a white nationalist event last year, was the focus of McCarthy’s bid for Speaker of the House earlier this year.
He rewarded her with high-profile assignments, including a seat on the National Security Committee, despite his history of espousing conspiracy theories and anti-Semitic rhetoric, and a call this year for a “national divorce” to separate red states from the blue ones. .
Past and present lawmakers, pundits and observers from both sides of the aisle have weighed in to condemn Greene:
