Rome believes that a solution is only possible through the conscious and responsible intervention of the European Union.
The Italian government has declared a state of emergency for six months due to a sharp increase in the number of migrants arriving in the country via the Mediterranean Sea, ANSA reports.
It was noted that the authorities approved this measure at the suggestion of the Minister of Civil Protection, Nello Musumeci.
“Let me be clear. The problem cannot be solved here. The solution is only possible through the conscious and responsible intervention of the European Union,” said Musumeci.
He said the country is facing a new challenge.
“This is a phenomenon that has never happened in the past. Islands alone cannot withstand this state of emergency,” he added.
During the state of emergency, faster procedures and actions can be implemented to offer a solution for the reception of migrants in a short time with proper criteria.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Georgia Meloni said the decision aims to provide a more efficient and timely response to managing the flow of migrants.
Remember, last week it was reported that a ship with 400 migrants sank in the Mediterranean Sea.
