The Council of the European Union has agreed on the allocation of 1 billion euros under the European Peace Fund (EPF) to support the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This will allow EU Member States to be reimbursed for ammunition provided to Kyiv from their stocks or by reprioritizing existing orders from February 9 to May 31, 2023.
This was announced by the Council of the EU.
This decision implements the first part of the EU Council agreement of March 20, 2023 on a tripartite approach aimed at accelerating the supply and joint procurement of artillery ammunition.
Recall that the EU countries agreed on joint purchases of a million ammunition for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Prior to this, European defense ministers supported the proposal of the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, to use a billion euros from the EPF to immediately supply Ukraine with ammunition from the available stocks of European armies. Another billion euros Borrell proposed to use for the joint purchase of shells.
There is no better demonstration of the EU’s unity and determination to continue to support Ukraine’s legitimate right to self-defense against the brutal Russian aggressor,” he said.
At least months will pass before the shells ordered as part of joint purchases end up in Ukraine. The first orders can be placed before the end of May.
