The Black Sea should become a NATO sea – Kuleba

The West does not have a consistent approach to the Black Sea, while Russia has always had one, the head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry noted.

The Black Sea, like the Baltic, should become a NATO sea. This was announced on April 13 by Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba at the First Black Sea Conference on the Security of the International Crimean Platform in Bucharest, the press service of the Foreign Ministry reports.

According to him, at the upcoming Alliance summit in Vilnius, it is necessary to take decisive steps towards Ukraine’s membership in the North Atlantic Alliance.

“The time has come to make the Baltic Sea what it has become. The Sea of NATO. This war proved that the security of the region is indivisible. A threat to one is a threat to all,” said the Foreign Minister.

The Minister noted that Russia, unlike the West, has always had a strategy for the Black Sea region. He recalled that the Kremlin’s first attempt to launch a military invasion of Crimea took place twenty years ago during the escalation around the island of Tuzla in the Kerch Strait.

“When fear-mongering caution closed NATO’s doors to Ukraine and Georgia in 2008, the Russian Federation quickly responded by attacking both countries. The Russian Federation is going crazy, but the some leaders have decided that the best strategy is to keep the crazy. Happy. This includes leaving its potential victims unarmed,” said Kuleba.

The minister also noted that the upcoming NATO summit in Vilnius is “the right time to correct the mistakes of the past and take decisive steps towards Ukraine’s membership in NATO.”

“To show that the door is not only open, but there is a clear plan when and how it will enter Ukraine,” said Kuleba.

The minister added that it makes sense for Ukraine to be part of the European Defense Initiative, and he recently raised this issue in a conversation with EU diplomat Josep Borrell.

Recall that Ukraine and Romania are holding the First Black Sea Security Conference in Bucharest as part of the work of the Crimean international platform.

Speaking at the conference, Kuleba said that peace will come to Ukraine when the country returns all temporarily occupied lands under its control.
