Akhmetov allocated 60 million hryvnias for the Mariupol revival project

Mariypol Reborn is the largest urban regeneration project in Europe since World War II.

Businessman Rinat Akhmetov allocated 60 million hryvnias ($1.5 million) to the Mariypol Reborn project to restore Mariupol after de-occupation from the Russian invaders. This was reported by the SCM press service on Wednesday, April 12.

“One year ago, the Russian army destroyed the city of Mariupol every day, taking the lives and destroying the fortunes of hundreds of thousands of peaceful residents of Mariupol and brave defenders of the city. One year ago and forever , Mariupol has become a symbol of human disaster and a symbol of the incompetence of Ukrainian soldiers,” said Akhmetov, commenting on his decision.

According to him, this money will be directed to the development of the Mariypol Reborn project office. It will find partners and the best solutions, as well as encourage citizens to develop a joint vision for the future of the city.

“The destruction and occupation of Mariupol should not be the end of its history. I am sure that Mariupol should be the symbol of the revival of our country after the war,” Akhmetov emphasized.

It is known that Mariypol Reborn is the largest urban revival project in Europe since the Second World War. It will be implemented on behalf of the head of the Donetsk OVA, Pavel Kirilenko, with the support of the EBRD, the World Bank, USAID, SCM and Metinvest. Also, some cities have already joined the project, ready to help in the restoration – Warsaw, Gdansk, Wroclaw, Utrecht.

The Mariypol Reborn project consists of five stages: writing a visual plan, developing a quick action plan, assessing damage and injury, developing a revival strategy, and implementing it. The work is already underway: Mariupol residents, together with project participants, are engaged in the development of a visual plan for their revived city.

Rinat Akhmetov has repeatedly said that he considers Mariupol a Ukrainian city that will definitely be freed from Russian occupation. He also mentioned that the city will be revived, and that he personally will spare no effort or money for it.

It was also reported that Akhmetov allocated 1 billion hryvnias to help the defenders of Mariupol. This project was called the Heart of Azovstal.
