The former president requested a one-month delay in the libel case against Jean Carroll because of media attention on the allegations against him.
Former US President Donald Trump has asked a Manhattan court to postpone his April 25 libel trial for four weeks, Reuters reported.
Trump’s lawyers believe the delay is necessary because of increased media attention to the accusations against the former president.
Trump’s defenders have insisted that, under his right to a fair trial, a “cool off” period is necessary after “a deluge of biased media coverage” and a prosecutorial indictment in the falsification case documents.
The meeting was to take place in a libel suit from writer and columnist Jean Carroll, who accused Trump of rape in the 1990s. The case was filed after the former president denied his allegations against him.
It will be recalled that on April 4, Trump was charged with falsifying business documents in the first degree in 34 episodes. The prosecutor’s office believes that the ultimate goal of the fraud was to hide information that could interfere with Trump’s victory in the 2016 presidential election.
