Armenia and Azerbaijan are talking about new border clashes near the Lachin corridor, which is controlled by Russian peacekeepers.
Armenia and Azerbaijan again accuse each other of military provocations. The Armenian Defense Ministry claimed that at around 4 pm local time, the Armenian military opened fire in the area of the village of Tekh on the territory of Armenia, not far from the Azerbaijani city of Lachin, passing by the road connecting in Armenia. that part of Karabakh where Armenians continue to live. Russian peacekeepers control this road and the Armenian enclave.
The Ministry of Defense of Azerbaijan states that positions of Azerbaijani troops near Lachin itself were fired upon from Armenia. A classic situation for a conflict between these countries.
Both Armenia and Azerbaijan reported dead and wounded on their sides.
The Russians are responsible
Russian peacekeepers were brought to the area of the current conflict under an agreement in November 2020, signed by Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia. They control that part of Karabakh territory where Armenians live. In the past, the city of Lachin, on the way to Karabakh, was occupied by the Armenian side, but was returned under the aforementioned agreement when Azerbaijan won the 44-day war in the fall of 2020.
Since then, the parties have been trying to agree where the border runs between them, using Soviet maps from different years. During more than 30 years of military conflict, the parties have not begun demarcating these territories.
Not for the first time
The Azerbaijani side, which has a military advantage, has repeatedly been accused of trying to occupy Armenian territory. So, in May 2021, apparently, the Azerbaijani military advanced several kilometers deep into Armenia. And in September last year, the biggest clash since the last war took place on the border, claiming dozens of lives on both sides.
The National Security Service (SNB) of Armenia announced at the end of March that, according to its calculations, in the area of Kornidzor (a village adjacent to Tegh), the Azerbaijani side advanced by at least five points deep into Armenian territory at a distance of 100 to 300 meters. Residents of the village of Tekh said that the Azerbaijanis have been staying in the territory belonging to the village for two weeks and are carrying out engineering work there.
This area has been a problem for border guards from both sides. A week ago, referring to the situation in the village of Tekh, the Prime Minister of Armenia, Nikol Pashinyan, said that the deployment points of the border guards at seven kilometers from the 12 have been determined, and the work continues in five kilometers.
In early March, a battle between Armenian police and the Azerbaijani military took place in Nagorno-Karabakh, and no one was killed. The versions of the parties about the causes of the skirmish are very different: the Azerbaijanis say that their military tried to check the car, allegedly carrying weapons and ammunition, the Armenians – that their police was just driving to work and was ambushed.
